What Causes Acne Scars?
When acne becomes inflamed, the inflammation can damage the surrounding skin tissue. As the skin heals, the body produces collagen to repair the area.
If too little collagen is produced during the healing process, a depression or indentation may remain in the skin. If too much collagen is produced, a raised scar may develop.
The severity of inflammation, genetics, repeated breakouts, and picking or squeezing acne lesions can all influence the likelihood of developing scars.
Not Every Acne Mark Is a Scar
Dark, red, or brown marks left behind after a breakout are often mistaken for acne scars.
These discolorations may actually be post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) or persistent redness rather than a true change in the structure of the skin.
True acne scars involve changes in the skin's texture.
This distinction matters because pigmentation and textured scars may require very different treatment approaches.
